Our Council

Representing over four million people through our work

Joining the Council for National Parks

National Parks have never been more essential for nature, people and climate than they are today.

Campaign for National Parks was originally formed when a group of like-minded organisations collaborated to secure shared objectives, and we continue to believe strongly in the value of a collective voice. Our Council dates back to 1936 and continues to provide a forum for the many and varied organisations with relevant interests, to come together to help us make the case for the changes needed to deliver our vision of wilder National Parks for all.

Membership ranges from large national charities such as the RSPB and the National Trust to smaller local organisations such as the Friends of the Dales and the South Downs Network and the interests represented cover everything from wildlife and conservation to recreation and access. This broad mix of members and interests ensures that the debates at our Council are both well-informed and lively.

History of the Council for National Parks

In 1936, our founding Council members came together under the leadership of John Dower and others, to work together on a campaign with a single objective: to secure the establishment of National Parks. Over the decades since that first campaign was won, the Council has continued to come together to support a shared endeavour, to secure and protect National Parks for people and nature. Today, many of the constituent organisations are actively supporting this cause as Council members, and we have been joined over the years by many more.
