Lake District National Parks listing as a World Heritage Site welcomed by Campaign for National Parks
Campaign for National Parks welcomes the decision by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) to designate the Lake District National Park a World Heritage Site.
Responding to the news, Fiona Howie, chief executive of Campaign for National Parks, said: “It is fantastic that the cultural landscape of the Lake District has received this global recognition – the first of the UK National Parks to do so. It is a beautiful, evolving landscape and this designation recognises the important role rural communities have played, and will continue to play, within our National Parks.”
“All of the National Parks face threats and challenges, not least from the uncertainty caused by the UK leaving the European Union. We hope this new designation will help make sure that the Lake District is protected, but also enhanced, for decades to come.”
