What is a Trustee?
At Campaign for National Parks we’re looking for new Trustees to join our Board, and with that in mind we’ve outlined what a Trustee is and spoken to one of our past Trustees Rosie MacIver about why she became one.
What is a Trustee?
Trustees are volunteers who ensure that the organisation is effective in carrying out the purpose for which it was set up. The Trustees make up the Board and have responsibility for overseeing the work of the charity, ensuring it is financially stable, is well run and fulfilling the charity’s objects, as set out in its articles of association.
What is the role of a Trustee?
Ensure their charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit. The Board of Trustees must make sure that the charity is carrying out the purposes for which it is set up, and no other purpose.
A helpful summary of trustee roles and responsibilities can be found in Charity Commission guidance The essential Trustee: what you need to know, what you need to do (CC3) – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
Do you need experience as a Trustee to join the Board at Campaign for National Parks?
No, new Board members will be offered a full induction and we do not require previous experience as a Board member to apply for Trustee roles.
Why should you join Campaign for National Parks as a Trustee?
We are a nimble and dynamic organisation, totally focused on campaigning for nature-rich and inclusive National Parks. If you want to be at the forefront of tackling some of the most important issues facing humankind, for some of the world’s most awe-inspiring places, we want to hear from you.
Rosie MacIver’s experience of being a Trustee:
How long were you a Trustee with Campaign for National Parks?
Just over 3 years.
What made you want to join the Board of Trustees at Campaign for National Parks?
I love National Parks and what they’re able to offer for people and nature. I wanted a way to use my skills to give back and ensure they stay open and protected for all.
What do you think makes a good Trustee?
To be a good trustee you need to have passion, be a team player and able to think long-term.
Are there any standout moments or experiences you have found most rewarding during your time as a Trustee?
I loved seeing the charity go from strength to strength. We’ve been on field trips to National Parks which has been great to meet lots of people and learn the challenges and successes of each one. I really enjoy coming together and learning from each other, knowing we all have the same shared goal but we’re each coming at it from different experiences.
What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about becoming a Trustee but has never been one before?
Just do it! Everyone has something different to bring to the table, and anything you’re unsure about you can learn from others. Everyone is very supportive and welcoming!
